Wireless Fire Alarm Monitoring

COMMERCIAL FIRE ALARM SYSTEM MONITORING SERVICES
security alarm box by national and local fire codes, any commercial monitored fire alarm system must use approved methods to communicate alarm and trouble signals to a monitoring station. Typically, this involves two (2) land telephone lines. Some local city fire codes require either one or BOTH of the phone lines to be DEDICATED. This means that nothing else can be connected to the line – no faxes, no credit card machine, no and elevator phones, no anything. If the local fire code allows one line to be shared and the other to be dedicated, then you still have to pay for at least one new phone line just for the fire alarm panel – usually about $50 to $75 per month.

security alarm box by national and local fire codes, any commercial monitored fire alarm system must use approved methods to communicate alarm and trouble signals to a monitoring station. Typically, this involves two (2) land telephone lines. Some local city fire codes require either one or BOTH of the phone lines to be DEDICATED. This means that nothing else can be connected to the line – no faxes, no credit card machine, and no elevator phones, no anything. If the local fire code allows one line to be shared and the other to be dedicated, then you still have to pay for at least one new phone line just for the fire alarm panel – usually about $50 to $75 per month. So you could possibly be paying anywhere from $50 to $150 per month just for the fire panel phone line(s) – NOT counting the bill to the fire alarm monitoring company that you also pay. Remember, your TOTAL fire monitoring cost is the phone bill plus the alarm company bill together.
In addition, many business phone systems are digital services – they are delivered to the business by Internet (VOIP phone service) rather than the traditional “POTS” copper line service. The new NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) national fire code regulations require that the digital Internet equipment be supplied with a power backup that will last for over 24 hours. If your phone system requires power to provide a dial tone to the fire panel, you would be required to add UPS back-up units to your phone system that are large and expensive.
There are now ALTERNATIVE methods for commercial fire alarm monitoring that do NOT use a dial tone – Internet monitoring, cell radio monitoring and AES radio monitoring.
INTERNET FIRE MONITORING: As mentioned above, with Internet monitoring, you typically must upgrade your Internet equipment so that you will have at least 24 hours of back-up power for network functioning during a power failure. The fire panel will already have the battery back-up for 24 hours, but your office network equipment probably only has 20 or 30 minutes of back-up power, so you will need to add more back-up capacity. An Internet modem must be installed in the fire panel, and a network wire must be installed between the fire panel and your Internet router/switch equipment.

The Internet monitoring bill from the alarm company will be about $5 higher than if the fire panel is using traditional phone lines, but the savings of not having to pay for dedicated phone lines is far greater. There will be a cost to install the Internet modem in the fire panel, but the installation cost will be paid for eventually from the savings from not having the phone line(s) bill.
CELL RADIO FIRE MONITORING: With cell radio monitoring, the cost of the radio is reasonable, but the fire code requires that the cell radio send signals to the monitoring station every 300 seconds (land telephone line monitoring only requires one test signal every 24 hours with two land lines connected to the fire panel). All of these signals sent every 300 seconds will push the monthly monitoring bill up by $25 to $35 higher than other alternate methods (Internet or AES radio monitoring). Therefore, the monthly cost of cell radio fire monitoring is lower than land telephone line monitoring but higher than Internet or AES radio monitoring.
AES RADIO FIRE MONITORING: With an AES 7788F fire radio, there are no land telephone lines and the monthly monitoring fee is lower than cell radio monitoring. This radio is higher in price than a cell radio or Internet communicator, but the monthly savings are greater, so the radio does pay for itself over time (see below).
$$ Savings Example
Let’s say you are paying $70 per month to your phone company for a dedicated phone line plus $30 per month to the alarm company for landline fire panel monitoring. Your total fire panel monitoring expense is $100 per month. If you can eliminate the phone company bill, you are saving $70. AHS Security Inc. will charge $36 per month for AES fire radio monitoring. Therefore, your total net savings is $64 per month ($100-$36). The radio equipment will typically cost around $800 to $900 to install. Applying the monthly savings to the initial one-time cost of the radio, the radio will be paid for in 14 months or less. After that, your savings is over $64 per month, or almost $800 per year. This assumes that you are only paying for one dedicated phone line with your current landline monitoring. If you have two (2) dedicated lines that you are now paying for, your savings will be much greater, and the payback on the new radio will come that much faster.
